Computer Shortcuts
By: Drew Garceau
Have you ever wondered what the right mouse button is for on the mouse that you use? Many people actually do not know. Normally computer savvy people are the ones that know what it is for and for some reason never divulge the secret of the right click. What about the scroll wheel, ever attempt to press it or get the weird circle with the up and down arrows? These are actually shortcuts that are built in to the operating system; do not be afraid of them.

Here are some uses of the right click:

Changing you desktop or screen saver
Normally you would go into the control panel and click on the Display icon. Next time right click on the desktop, make sure you are not on any icons, and select Properties. You will end up in the same dialog where you can change the power settings, desktop image, and screen saver.

Arranging your icons
From the same right click above; you can organize your desktop icons. You have some choices in the matter also. You can arrange the icons by Name, Size, Type, and the date they were modified. If you just ant the desktop to be automatically arranged for you can choose Auto Arrange. Ever have two icons with one on top of the other, select align to grid and they will all separate according to a grid that your desktop is set with. Do not like icons on the desktop, select Show Desktop Items if it has a check next to it. This will uncheck the setting and your desktop will be clean. Another choice that you have is to run the Desktop clean up Wizard. This basically looks at the icons on the desktop and removes them when they have not been used for a specified amount of time.

Ever what to select a link on a webpage but not lose where you are on the current?
Right click on the link on the webpage, select Open in New Window. A new browser window will appear.

Automatically scroll pages in Word or Internet Explorer
You will need a mouse that has the scroll wheel on it. Go ahead and press it down, notice the weird circle with the arrows in it. Move the mouse down a little bit. The page should start to scroll down. This is sometimes convenient when you are wasting you time reading web pages, not this one of course. The same is true in Word Documents.

Rename files
Ever wish that you named a file different that what it is actually named. Right click on the file and select Rename. The file name will be highlighted and you can type the new name.

See what file is newer
Some people like to save copies of files in different locations. This can be great for backup, however when was the copy that you are saving for backup last copied. Is it 6 months older then the one you are using on a daily basis? Check it, right click on the file and select Properties. On the general tab you can see when the file was created, modified, and accessed. You can even make it so that the file can only be read and not saved over. This is done by selecting Read-Only. This is nice for those documents that you do not want written over and used only for a starting point, like corporate expense reports. The user will have to change the name of the file if they save it.

Zip files
If you are running Windows XP you can create zip files from any file that you have. Zip files are those things that people send when the real file is a little to large to send alone. Zip programs compress the files using algorithms and removing duplicate data. When you uncompress them they are returned to normal size with no data being lost. Right click on a file, select Send To, then Select Compressed File. You will create a zip file in the directory or folder that you are currently in. You will not lose the file that you compressed, it will still remain there..

Other Send To commands:

Desktop
This creates a shortcut to the file and places it on the desktop.

Mail recipient
Creates a new email message with the file attached to the message.

My Documents
Send a copy of the file to your my documents.

Modify your start menu
You can make customizations to your start menu. Simply right click on is and select Properties. You can change how the start menu looks, and acts. From this same dialog you can change how the task bar looks and works also, it is the other tab in the dialog.

Spelling errors in work
Ever get on of those red zigzag lines under a word when you are typing. You have probably just misspelled a word. Right click on it; you will be given spelling options for the word. Select on ant it will replace the word for you. The green zigzag is a grammar error; some of these may not have any options to select to correct the problem.

Copy/Paste/Cut
Highlight a word in a document, do this by moving the cursor next to the word and press and holding the left mouse button. Now right click on the word, you can select Cut (removes the word and places it in to memory, memory will be replaced with the next item copied or cut), Copy (places a copy of the selected text in memory, memory will be replaced with the next item copied or cut), Paste (takes the word or phrase in memory and places it where the cursor is). You can also change the look of the word or phrase by highlighting it, right clicking and selecting Font. You can change the color, size and font of the word or phrase.

The right click is many times over looked. As said before many people do not know it is there, or are afraid to press it. In reality it is very harmless to just press it. It will only bring up a menu that you can select option from. Many times you will realize that there are menus on objects that you did not even know about, or knew that you can configure from the menu. Give right click a try.

If you are a lefty, and prefer to use the mouse with you left hand but hate that you have the buttons configured incorrectly, change them. Go into the Control Panel and open the Mouse properties of you computer. Take a look around, you may be able to become more efficient by changing what the buttons do and react when they are pressed, even switch them so you lefties can click correctly.
