The Great Lakes Towing Company

The Great Lakes Towing Company has played a major role in the towing business on the Great Lakes since its incorporation in New Jersey on July 7, 1899 -- 100 years ago. The Company's founding shareholders comprised a veritable "Who's Who" of the nation's great industrialists of the day, including John D. Rockefeller, Jeptha H. Wade, and James R. Sinclair. Popularly called "The Towing Company" for its entire 100-year history, the Company has been a significant marine operations link in one of the major economic lifelines of North America -- the fourth seacoast and the Great Lakes Seaway System. The Towing Company has continuously evolved to meet the changing demands of the agricultural, steel, and construction industries, and the needs of the ships and tug/barge units which serve those industries by adapting and improving its services to the requirements of each new day.

Company services include local harbor towing, docking and undocking, interport towing of vessels and barges, ice breaking, rescue, and assistance to grounded or damaged ships. The Company’s tugboats tow every kind of barge and marine structure, and provide barging services for through cargo movements, whose origin or destination may be other than a Great Lakes’ port, such as a movement of heavy lift cargo from Pennsylvania, down the Mississippi River system to Louisiana and the Gulf, or the movement of the world’s largest telescope mirror via the Seaway to Erie, Penn. Company tugboats also perform harbor towing services in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in the islands of the Caribbean -- recognition of the superior capability of the same type harbor tugs used to dock vessels on the Great Lakes.

Where is my order? - How to avoid disappointing your customers

I recently placed a web order with a well-known US retailer for holiday gifts for my family. So with their catalog on my desk and my laptop in my hands, I launched their site to place my order. I should have known I am in for future trouble when I had to rely on my printed catalog to place my order. The site was cumbersome to shop, the customer experience quite poor and overall it was not conducive for easy search and retrieval of information. But heck, they seemed to have their items nicely displayed in their catalog, I knew it will make a great gift, they claimed the items are available for immediate shipment, and even my credit card seemed to have been accepted. What I did not know was that the waiting game and frustration was about to start.

  Ask The Experts

Each day we field scores of calls on all sorts of business and technology related topics. Each month we select an interesting question and post our response online.
Question
How can I 'Copy and Paste' from a .pdf document?

Answer

You can use the 'Snapshot' tool to copy the selection (text, an image or both) to the clipboard or another application. Both text and images are copied as an image.

Select the Snapshot tool. (This looks like a camera icon on the Adobe Reader toolbar) If you do not see this on your toolbar, click on Tools, Basic and Snapshot. Then do one of the following:

  • Click in the page to capture the content displayed on screen.
  • Drag a box around the text, images or combination of both.
  • Drag a box within an image to copy just a portion of the image.

Colors in the selected area are inverted momentarily to highlight the selection. You can open a file in another application and paste the copied selection directly into the target document.

Note: You can add the Snapshot tool to your current Adobe Reader toolbar if not currently displaying by clicking on 'Tools', 'Basic' and then 'Show Basic Toolbar'.
