Answer
Search engines are a convenient way to find similar bits of information contained within the billions of pages on the Web. Most of the time to the end user it doesn’t matter how the results get generated but to the educated user, knowing the corporate philosophies of the top search engines might help to consistently generate better results. So to answer the question of which search engine is best is to ask you the question, what are you looking for?
If you answer that you are looking for the most information on a given topic then I would say your best bet is to use Google, MSN Search or Yahoo! Search. Of course there are others, but like anything else, it’s probably a good idea to use the engines that aren’t afraid to invest heavily themselves and their technology. It’s a known fact that Google wants to make all of the information contained in the universe available online and while Google quietly goes about indexing (now over 8 billion pages!) the folks at Microsoft have redesigned their search engine and are promoting theirs as the one to use for higher quality results.
So which is better? It’s really a personal choice of give and take. Personally, I use Google because it’s faster and easier but when I can’t find clarity on Google I will use MSN Search and usually find what I’m looking for. I would suggest you try one or the other for a week, then switch and assess after the fact and see which you liked better, which generated better results and which was easier to use. You might be surprised that while Google is busy becoming a verb, MSN Search and Yahoo! Search are in a hurry to catch up.
